Let's go ... it's week 5! Really, week 5? I cannot believe I am saying this. When I started the One Room Challenge Modern Two Story Great Room Makeover I thought, "wow, six weeks. I have so much time!". Well those weeks have just flown by, and we have just one week to the reveal! This means, it's really crunch time!
Before we delve into the progress we have made in the last week, I want to take a minute to share my gratitude. I have to say, I have truly been loving the process of making over my modern two story great room for the One Room Challenge and really need to thank Linda Holt from the One Room Challenge and Better Homes and Gardens for continuing this biannual design/makeover event year after year! I also really need to thank my wonderful collaborators for their generosity: Sherwin Williams, Fabricut, Couristan, Great Big Canvas, The Pillowstore Company and Cutting Edge Stencils. I really could not have completed this space in my budget without these fabulous partnerships and I am absolutely delighted that they all pitched in to make my vision a reality.
This season, I have really thought "out of the box" and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. I messed around with power tools, caulk, spackle and paint to create an accent wall (AGAIN!). To take a look back at the one I did for my master bedroom last season for the One Room Challenge, have a look here. If you missed my design for the trim accent wall for this season's One Room Challenge have a look (here).
We have made headway on the cabinets and the mantle. My carpenter has made several trips to my home over the past week - scribing to get custom cabinets and a mantle just right is a ton of work!
Right now, the space is a complete mess! But I'm thinking it will all be worth it when the cabinets are in, the wallpaper is hung and the paint is dry! An exciting point: the hole behind the speaker has been patched!
Another very exciting thing that happened this week - and really I think it is total serendipity - I found these rattan ottoman/stools from Crate and Barrel in the dumpster! I had been looking for ways to add extra seating to my great room and these ottomans were just in the right place at the right time - or maybe I was in the right place at the right time!
I immediately fell in love with the hourglass shape and the woven texture and jumped on them the moment I saw them. I was not a fan of the brown wicker and some parts of the wicker were worn (I think they were a floor model) - so I knew I had to paint them over. I watched a ton of wicker makeover videos on youtube and instagram and every bit of social media seemed to point to spray paint as the easiest way to makeover rattan/wicker/cane. Even Martha Stewart said so! After much convincing, my husband reluctantly grabbed a few cans of white spray paint and gave these stools a few coats. Here's a quick look:
Now that the ottomans are primed and prepped, I'm not quite sure if I want to leave them white or if I want to add some texture or color to them. I've always loved the effect of ombre and the ideas that are floating in my head include the following:
I have also been thinking of ways to add contrast to the space, so perhaps a more striking pattern would work? Here are more ideas that are floating in my head:
I guess you can say, I'm still undecided! What do you think would look best? Leave me a comment below or email me - I would love to hear from you. Be sure to check out the other guest participants and their One Room Challenge projects (HERE). You don't want to miss the 20 featured bloggers (HERE).
